In your quest for a slimmer waistline, a leaner body, or more muscle definition, protein bars can be a great tool to help you build and maintain muscle while losing fat. But like anything, you must make sure you are using them properly and eating the right type of energy bar for your specific needs.

I have been using protein bars as a part of my diet for over twenty years. I know how important they can be in our every day diet plan. It does not matter whether you are an athlete, bodybuilder, exercising or not, protein bars used properly can have very desirable results.

A good protein bar can have a profound effect on our energy levels, body fat levels, and muscle condition. They keep your metabolism up, and support your health and fitness lifestyle.

Best utilized as an energy boosting snack, but in a pinch they can be a good meal replacement. There are so many flavors and varieties available, you can be certain to find an alternative healthy energy bar to replace whatever your favorite junk food ‘vice’ might be.

Before buying any nutrition or protein bar, you have got to take a good look at the label. Pay close attention to what it is exactly that you are buying. What are we looking for here?

For starters, protein. Choose a bar that has at least 5 grams of protein. That is a minimum. The most productive bars, metabolically speaking, have at least 12 grams of protein while being less than 230 calories.

A high quality protein bar will list whey protein as its first protein source.

There may be additional protein sources as well, such as calcium caseinate, soy isolate, milk protein isolate, and egg whites. These are acceptable proteins, and most bars contain protein form more than one source. Gelatin is a very low quality protein, and is also sometimes an ingredient.

Take note of the carbohydrate content. We want to be energized, not falling asleep after a big blood sugar surge. Choose a bar that has less than 30 grams of carbohydrates. If you are dieting to lose weight, you best bet is to stick with bars that have about 20 grams of carbohydrates or less.

A bar with some fiber is certainly a nice attribute. More and more bars on the market have fiber, but there are still plenty that have none.

Even so, a protein bar with no fiber is still 100% better for your diet that any other junk food. So if your favorite energy bar has no fiber and uses high fructose corn syrup, it may not be the healthiest but still a better choice than a junk food snack.

Eating a protein bar that is ‘cookie dough’ flavor is still dramatically healthier than eating real cookie dough or cookies for that matter. If people replaced their junk food intake with protein energy bars for one year, the results could be staggering.

Unhealthy snacking simply sucks the energy right out of you and increases body fat.

Okay, so what about the fat? Don’t be alarmed when you see that a lot of the protein bars have 20-40% of their total calories from fat. These are usually acceptable forms of fat that will keep you sustained with energy. The fat will help sustain hunger and steadily energize you.

Total calories for most of the bars range between 100-230. That is a perfectly acceptable ’snack size’ range for anybody

Just like any other food source, too much intake will cause weight gain. Just because they are protein bars, or energy bars, does not mean you can snack on them all day long. Use them properly and protein bars can help you achieve weight loss and fitness goals.

Stock up and keep them readily available. If you don’t have them, you can’t use them. A healthy protein bar snack can prevent a bad choice at the vending machine or convenience store.

You can watch a protein tips video at Fat Into The Fire along with other great tips to keep energized!

Inflammation. It is something we have all experienced in one-way or another. Perhaps it was a skin rash, indigestion, a sprained ankle or even a sore throat. Whatever the case may be, the outcome is usually the same- swelling, pain and redness. Inflammation can be a good thing-it’s your body’s response to injury and illness. The increased circulation, swelling, heat, and even pain it causes actually help your body to heal. But prolonged inflammation can stimulate the disease process. Inflammation can be minor or it can be something that leads to chronic inflammation, which could lead to more serious diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, arthritis, fibromyalgia, dementia and more.

Some of the causes of inflammation are viral and bacterial infections, stress, toxins, free-radical damage, repeated trauma and allergens. Not surprisingly, another contributor to inflammation is a high-fat, high-sugar, and high-carbohydrate diet. Meals high in sugar and fats have been found by the University of Buffalo to release free radicals into the bloodstream and ultimately increase the inflammatory state in the body. So what can we do to prevent inflammation?

Since inflammation can occur so frequently it is important to develop smart lifestyle habits. As often as you can choose healthy fats such as extra virgin olive oil for cooking and for salad dressings. Eliminate or reduce the use of margarine, shortening, and partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, which are sources of trans fats, and do the same with butter. Eat more fish, especially those high in omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3s help thin the blood, prevent blood clots, and reduce inflammation. Increase the consumption of dark chocolate. Since chocolate has an anti-inflammatory capability, it can effectively lower the risk of certain disease and relieve inflammation. The powerful polyphenol nutrients in cocoa and acai are known to be able to inhibit different inflammatory mechanisms.

Antioxidants are known to fight off free radicals that are caused by stress, environmental factors, pollution, the foods that we eat and of course inflammation. Most people don’t know this but cocoa is ranked as one of the highest dietary source of antioxidants. Cocoa has nearly twice the antioxidants of red wine and up to three times the amount found in green tea.

So go ahead and indulge in a healthy treat. Your body will thank you for it later!

Having a healthy immune system is very important for people today, as getting sick means not just being uncomfortable and inconvenienced; it can also mean missing work, passing the sickness on to others, and doctor’s visits and medicines that put quite a dent in the budget. The body is built in such a way that it has natural defenses against sicknesses as part of the immune system but strengthening and protecting this system is important, as is giving it all the help we can.

Some people just have a naturally strong immune system; maybe you know someone that never seems to get sick or that when he or she is sick they get over it quite quickly. It’s true that genetics can play a large part in how well all of our bodily systems work, but even for those who seem to have some weakness in this area there is much one can do to bolster up their immune system.

It’s interesting how eating right has so much to do with our health overall, and this is true with our immune system as well, after all you are what you eat. Without the necessary amino acids and vitamins the body needs, you can be more prone to sicknesses. Also, filling up on foods that are of poor nutritional quality will overload your system by making it work harder to digest these foods when it could instead be building itself up. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables is probably the most important thing you can do help your body. Those who fail to do so are usually in very poor health - think of those that live in countries or areas of the world where they have no fresh food. Usually they suffer from many diseases that affect their skin, teeth, bones, and health overall. In times past, persons who didn’t get enough vitamin C were more likely to get scurvy; when these were given oranges or limes to eat every day the cases of scurvy virtually disappeared. If you just cannot make changes to your diet, consider taking a multivitamin every single day, but do what you can to cut out fast foods, fried foods, prepackaged foods, and sugary foods and substitute these with fruit, leafy green vegetables, and foods with whole grains all of which are beneficial to your body.

The body also needs adequate rest to recharge its own batteries and strengthen itself. Sleep is the time when the body heals and repairs itself. If you don’t get enough sleep your body will be weaker and your immune system will be compromised. So in order to be the healthiest you can be, it’s important to eat right and get enough sleep, and this means every single day.

Common vitamins and over the counter products can help your body to ward off attack by diseases such as Vitamin A, Vitamin B, Vitamin C and Vitamin E.

Vitamin A is an important immune system stimulant. DR. Nauss reported a reduced T-cell immune response in patients with a Vitamin A deficiency. Vitamin A deficiency may increase the risk of cancers of the lung, larynx, bladder, esophagus, stomach, colon, rectum and prostate. Vitamin A is stored in the liver and fat cells of the human body and can reach toxic levels. DO NOT take more than the recommended dosage of Vitamin A.

All of the different Vitamin Bs taken together as B-Complex work together as a team to perform vital biological processes, such as energy production and efficient metabolic function. Vitamin B boost energy levels and help fight fatigue.

Vitamin C reduces the risk of cervical dysphasia, a precancerous condition. It is essential for defending the body against pollution and infection and enhances the immune system. Take 1,000 to 5,000 mg daily.

Vitamin E supplies Oxygen to the heart and the other muscles in the body. Accelerates wound healing and aids in the functioning of the immune system.

**The following information has been compiled from my own experiences, my reading, and studying as a Personal Trainer and Holistic Life Coach.**

Fresh is best. Try to eat fresh fruits and vegetables and often as possible. If you cannot use fresh ingredients, frozen is your next best option.

More is less. Try eating smaller meals more often throughout the day. This can be challenging so start by slowly reducing the portions of your meals. It will get easier to eat less food each meal, but more meals over time.

Appreciate your food. Try slowly decreasing intake of salt and other excessive seasonings. Learn to appreciate the taste of your foods without masking them with excessive flavors and dressings.

Build your own program. Instead of focusing on all the different advice on how to build your diet (food diagrams, fad diets, etc.) make sure you vary your foods daily. Try all the different colors in the vegetable and fruit groups. Everything standard does not work for everybody. Discover the healthy foods that you enjoy and give you satisfaction.

Enjoy your food! If you take the time when eating to truly enjoy the food, you are more likely to be satisfied and not over eat. Take the time between bites to savor the flavor and chew the food.

Plan your meals. Take the time to plan your meals and snacks for a week at a time. If you know ahead of time what you are eating it makes it easier to stick to your healthy eating habits and achieve your goals. I have found that when I am in a crunch and do not have any idea what I have in the kitchen this is when I fall to junk food or other less desirable eating habits.

Get help and support. Invite your friends and family to go on your healthy eating journey with you. This will help everyone to stay motivated and achieve desired goals so much easier than trying to go through alone.

Set reasonable goals. Do not expect to change yourself or your eating habits overnight. Write out a 4-6 week plan and outline small changes to focus on each week. If you have not met your goal each week do not get discouraged, just refocus your energy on accomplishing that goal. You may also need to reevaluate the goal to make sure it is reasonable to accomplish in the period you have given yourself.

Love yourself!! it does not matter how drastic you change your eating habits or anything else about yourself. If you do not first love and accept yourself you will not be satisfied with any change you experience. Accept and celebrate who you already are and then began working on making changes to be a healthier version of yourself.

**Always consult your physician before starting any exercise regimen if you have any serious conditions or illnesses. This information does not take the place of your physician’s advice or opinions**

To be vegetarian can mean different things. Technically, the word Vegetarian means the theory or practice of living on a vegetarian diet (Merriam-Webster online dictionary). According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, Vegetarianism means the theory or practice of living solely upon vegetables, fruits, grains, and nuts - with or without the addition of milk products and eggs. According to many resources, there are different types of Vegetarianism. Let me explain the different definitions:

1. Lacto-ovo vegetarianism - Does not eat any meat, poultry, or fish but does eat eggs, dairy, and honey.

2. Lacto vegetarianism - Does not eat any meat, poultry, fish, or eggs but does eat dairy and honey.

3. Ovo vegetarianism - Does not eat any meat, poultry, fish, or dairy but does eat eggs and honey.

4. Veganism - Does not eat any meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy, or honey. Technically, vegans are also strict on what goods they use and do not use any animal products in their day to day lives (for example, do not use leather shoes).

5. Fruitarianism - Only eats fruit, nuts, seeds, and other plant matter that can be gathered without harming the plant.

6. Raw veganism - Only eats fresh and uncooked fruit, nuts, seeds, and vegetables

7. Dietary veganism - This diet follows veganism, but differs from veganism as other animal products (such as, belts and shoes) may be used in their daily lives..

8. Semi-vegetarianism - Only eats seafood and/or poultry in limited amounts (may also include dairy, eggs and honey).

9. Pescetarianism - Only eats fish or other seafood (may include dairy, eggs and honey).

10. Pollotarianism - Only eats fowl and poultry (may include dairy, eggs and honey).

11. Flexitarianism - Vegetarian diet primarily but allows occasional exceptions.

The last type of Vegetarianism I would like to bring to light is the Psuedo-vegetarian, these are the types that claim to be vegetarian but aren’t. This term may also be used by other vegetarians to describe semi-vegetarians including Pescetarians, Pollotarians, and Flexitarians.

There are many different reasons on why a person could become or chooses to be vegetarian, which can include personal beliefs, religion, and personal health concerns. Of course there are always different reasons for each person on why he/she should or is vegetarian in some form or another.

If you review the definition of vegetarianism in Wikipedia you will see all the different listed sources in the footnotes that relate to this topic. Various studies have been taken to prove that vegetarianism may help in the longevity of life, improvement of health, and it may significantly lower risks of cancer and other diseases.

For many, vegetarianism is a scary thing. People believe that one cannot live on this type of diet, but it has been done for thousands of years. Religious groups such as Hindus, and some Sikhs and Buddhists follow the ways of vegetarianism. Of course this diet does take getting used to and it is worth seeing all the options out there. These diets can be followed by increasing nut consumption, eating tofu or soya, as well as introducing yourself to a lot of new vegetables and fruit.

I myself, love animals, and I was ignorant. I could never kill an animal. I could not see them suffer for my benefit. Thanks to many videos out there today I was able to confront these issues and decide once and for all (considering I have tried and failed a few times at being vegetarian) that I was going to stick to it. I have no cravings and no desires because this is what I want.

It is very possible to be vegetarian in Toronto and in Canada itself. I know you may be thinking, well that means I cannot eat out anymore. That is not true. I have visited many restaurants that do not serve much, if any vegetarian meals. All I do is let them know that I am strictly vegetarian and see if they can fix me something. I have never had a place that does not cater to that. I have found once you tell people that, they are very understanding and will usually go the extra mile to cater to your needs.

If you have any doubts of the animals you are eating, or the items you are consuming, maybe it is time to gain some knowledge about what you are putting in your body. There are always ways to make this work, if this is what you want. By the ways, I do not hang out with other vegetarians as I do not know any, this may be a milestone, but like I said if you do want it then that is all that matters. Mind over matter, like our mothers used to say.

I recently heard that the well known adage of drinking about 8 glasses of water a day was a waste of time as human beings got all the water they needed from the food they ate! This seems incredible as our bodies are made up of mostly water with vitamins and minerals mixed in!

The following few facts may help clarify this for those who may be in any doubt.

75% of Europeans are chronically dehydrated (likely applies to half the world’s population).

In 37% of Europeans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.

Even MILD dehydration will slow down one’s metabolism as much as 3%.

One glass of water shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.

Lack of water the number one trigger of daytime fatigue.

Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.

A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, gives trouble calculating basic maths and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.

Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.

In the decade from 1993 to the year 2003, the UK bottled water market (including water coolers), more than tripled. Since 1993, it has grown from just 580 million litres to well over 2 billion litres today.

The UK bottled water market is now worth over £1.5 billion.

Bottled water is a fast growing sector of the soft drinks industry in the UK. As a nation we now drink more bottled water than fruit juices, wine or spirits. UK bottled water consumption per person surpassed 35 litres in 2005, up from 30 litres in 2002. This is testament, perhaps, to the now ubiquitous acceptance of the advice to drink 8 glasses of water a day for optimum health.

Are you drinking the amount of water you should every day?

Please Visit our website!

“If your body fails you through your or others neglect, where will you live?”

My aim is to help people understand how to help themselves by using natural methods rather than relying on mainstream products, which may have unwanted side effects. By studying research from many sources I have found that usually common sense prevails.

One the best book to read is “The Detox Strategy, Vibrant Health in 5 Easy Steps” by Brenda Watson, C.N.C. with Leonard Smith, M.D. A powerful educational health book on how to live a healthy and vibrant life, by reducing the toxins that our body absorbs from the environment and things we eat. This book has so much factual information which can change your total life for the better. It changed my family daily life regiment.

In Chapter 6 of this book, “Step Three: Nourish Your Cells and Systems” she writes concerning the importance of antioxidants, along with amino acids, essential fatty acids. probiotics, enzymes, fiber supplements, liquid greens and whole-food multinutrients, and the detox diet for nourishing good cell growth, especially since the typical American diet is vastly unbalanced and contains insufficient amounts of nutrients required for optimal health.

“More than 60% of Americans are deficient in one or more essential nutrients. The average diet further adds to our toxic load through refined sugars, additives, preservatives, and exposure to pesticides. Eating closer to nature-choosing organically grown foods and high-quality sources of proteins and other nutrients-will support our bodies’ detoxification processes.”

Also, stated is that “supplements can support your detox program and your path to vibrant health”. So, we are in need of help, due to our inefficient eating habits and toxins that we take in our bodies.
